Hello all,

I am suspecting that parthenium has spread to my village, which is in the southern part of Bihar in the last 2-3 years. I noticed it as a new kind of plant when I visited my village recently (after a period of 3.5 years) and local people also confirmed that it was not there a few years ago. I was not able to get any response from the local Health Officials when I reported it to them. I need advice from you on the following issues:

1. How can I confirm that it is really parthenium? I have seen the picture on your web page and it looks very similar. But since the picture has been taken from a distance, I can't see the details of the leaves/flowers etc. Do you have more detailed pictures and/or tests that I can perform to be sure?

2. If it is really parthenium, what can we do in the following areas and how?
    - Informing local people and getting them to work together to remove this curse
    - Getting help from Government
    - Getting help from other organizations like yourself
    - Getting technical information on how to eradicate this plant: what herbicides can be used, etc.

I would really appreciate if you can answer my queries.

Thanking you,
Arabinda Banerjee, Raipur(INDIA)

Dear Dr.Oudhia,
I congratulate you for taking this initiative in the field of Parthenium research, which, need not to say, has become an obnoxious pest of this region and the country. I am sure this website will certainly help all the scientists, students etc. who are working or want to work in the field of parthenium. Inspite of your very young age, you are giving a great service to the society by creating awareness and coordinating the research workers through this new website. I will certainly participate in this website. I wish all success for this new website and congratulate you again for this initiative.

With warm regards,
Dr.R.N.GANGULI, Senior Scientist, Department of Entomology, Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Raipur(INDIA)
