BACKGROUND

Parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus) popularly called as white top, carrot weed, fever few, is an annual herb growing to a height of 1.0 to 1.5m with profuse flowering through out the year. It is a native of North East Mexico, West Indies, tropical south and North America. After its introduction to India during 1956, the weed has now spread all over the country barring western parts of West Coast and temperate regions of Himalayan range. Owing to absence of natural enemies, the weed has spread from no man’s land to cultivated fields causing great concern in agricultural production including decreasing the area of grazing lands.

Parthenium hysteroophorus belonging to Asteraceae has become pernicious weed causing health problems to animals, human beings, replacing other plants causing imbalances in the bo-diversity and yield losses in various Field and Horticultural crops. In view of the fact that Parthenium is causing health problems , threatening the bio-diversity and reduction in crop yields, it is intended to have international Conference on Parthnium to update the status of Parthenium in different pats of the World, consolidat all the research results and to come out with workable recommendations to manage this weed in different situations. Eco-system, make useful suggestions to policy makers to combat the weed and to further activate the formation of working group on Parthenium. The First Internal Conference was held during October 6-8, 1997 at Dharwad, India. This is the Second International conference being held at Bangalore during December 2005.
