Parthenium(Gajar Ghas) awareness programme and other social activities by BETWA ( VETRAWATI ) UTTHAN SAMITI, Vidisha, India.

The water conservation capacity of the river Betwa has continuously been affected due to several reasons like soil erosion , silt influx , submerging idols in it etc.

Immersion of ashes , bones & splinters of the dead bodies after cremation ,stale flowers from the temples and unusable material of religious activities on the bank of the Betwa are some of the causes that are contaminating the water of the river Betwa. The pollution in Betwa is also increasing due to bathing of cattle into it, cleaning of the vehicles and cereals and mixing of sewage water. In addition to it Betwa receives every year more than a million gallons of contaminated water and other industrial effluent which is an alarming factor that needs constant attention & adoption of suitable measures to prevent the holy river Betwa. However , looking to the present condition of the river Betwa and realizing the fact that not many measures have been taken in this direction , steps have been taken by Smt. Sudha Choudhary , I.A.S. , Collector, District Vidisha.

To start with, a cleanliness campaign has been launched in the entire Vidisha district gathering citizens and officials to perform " SHARAMDAN" for uprooting the "
GAJAR GHAS " and removing the silt in the river Betwa.
